Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Difference Between a DO and an MD?

Both DOs (Doctors of Osteopathy) and MDs are fully qualified physicians licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery. However, Osteopathic physicians bring something extra to medicine.

DOs focus on preventive healthcare and practice a "whole person" approach to medicine. Instead of simply focusing on the treatment of specific symptoms or illnesses, they regard the body as an integrated whole.

In fact, DOs receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system—the body's interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones that make up two-thirds of the body mass. This training provides osteopathic physicians with a better understanding of how an illness or injury in one part of the body can affect other parts.

By combining all available medical options, DOs offer their patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today.
